Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Crohn's & Ulcerative Colitis)
Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are the two main forms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD): long-term conditions involving inflammation of the digestive tract. Unlike IBS, IBD is an inflammatory condition and is usually managed jointly with a gastroenterology team, often including medication.
Nutrition needs can vary significantly between flare-ups and periods of remission. During a flare, some clients need a lower-fibre, easily digested diet. During remission, the focus often shifts to rebuilding a varied, nutritious diet and correcting any deficiencies caused by inflammation or reduced absorption.
How a dietitian can help
- Tailor dietary advice to your current stage, whether that's a flare or remission
- Help identify and correct common deficiencies (iron, B12, vitamin D, calcium)
- Support safe reintroduction of foods as symptoms settle
- Work alongside your gastroenterology team for consistent, joined-up care
- Support nutritional needs around surgery, stomas or nutritional supplement drinks where relevant
