Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common digestive conditions seen in UK clinics, affecting around 1 in 10 people. It's a functional gut disorder, meaning the bowel doesn't work as it should even though nothing appears structurally wrong. Symptoms typically include abdominal cramping, bloating, wind and irregular bowel habits: anything from diarrhoea to constipation, or a mix of both.
The exact cause of IBS isn't fully understood, but it's thought to involve a combination of gut sensitivity, altered gut motility, stress and diet. Common triggers include certain carbohydrates (known as FODMAPs), caffeine, alcohol, large meals and stressful periods.
If you're living with IBS, you're not alone, and there's a lot that can be done to improve your quality of life. Many clients find real relief through structured dietary changes alongside simple lifestyle adjustments.
