Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

PCOS is a common hormonal condition affecting around 1 in 10 women in the UK. It's associated with irregular periods, insulin resistance and excess androgen (male hormone) levels, and can affect fertility, skin, hair growth and mood.

Diet doesn't cause PCOS, but nutrition can play a significant role in managing its symptoms, particularly around insulin resistance, weight and inflammation. Many women with PCOS find that even modest, sustainable dietary changes lead to noticeable improvements in energy, cycle regularity and overall wellbeing.

How a dietitian can help

  • Focus on balanced meals that support stable blood sugar and insulin sensitivity
  • Support sustainable weight management where this is a personal goal
  • Advise on nutrients linked to PCOS symptom management, such as fibre, omega-3s and inositol
  • Address symptoms such as fatigue, cravings and mood alongside your wider goals
  • Work alongside your GP or gynaecologist for a joined-up approach to care
